Phenolic content and antioxidant activity of medicinal plants

Medicinal plants have played an essential role in the development of human culture. Today, contribution industries such as fine chemicals, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, drugs, and industrial raw materials is remarkable. Recent studies shown that constituents with functional properties effectively treat prevent chronic degenerative diseases. Based on importance medicinal plants, this study aimed to quantify total phenolic content antioxidant activity 10 plants. The was quantified using Swain Hillis method a Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, while determined 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) reagent. samples were dried circulating air incubator at 60 ºC for 48 h before extraction. compounds extracted 50% v/v ethanol, acetone, distilled water. results showed 80% analyzed had similar contents not statistically different, average 4.864 mg GAE g-1. ranged from 30% 75%. ability scavenge free radicals expressed percentage inhibition oxidation radical. In addition, no significant differences observed yield obtained extraction solvents, ethanol used study.
